What’s the fuss about ADHD

by Dr Brendan Belsham

Parents have waited long enough for information on ADD which provides honest answers to their questions. Dr. Brendan Belsham, a Johannesburg-based child psychiatrist, has written a book that explores the many controversies surrounding the condition.

Dr. Belsham examines the issues which most concern parents, such as the accuracy of diagnosis and the safety of commonly used medications. He presents a balanced account that is both accessible and readable.

This book explores the controversies surrounding the condition and presents the relevant science in a way that is accessible and readable. It is written mainly for parents of inattentive children but it is also for the many professionals involved with ADHD.  Parents and professionals alike will be encouraged to think more deeply about the condition and what it means for our children.

What’s the fuss about ADHD? covers various aspects of the disorder, including its history, diagnosis, causes and treatment.

The author draws on his years of practice as a child psychiatrist to address the issues which most concern parents, such as accuracy of diagnosis and the safety of commonly used medications. In doing so, he provides a balanced account that acknowledges the many ethical complexities at play.

This is the best book I have ever read on the subject of ADHD. My wife and I read the book over the December holidays and we battled to put it down. It is very informative and also easy to read. Dr Belsham gave medical facts in a way that a layperson can understand and make sense of what is being communicated.

The book covers the history of ADHD, symptoms and mitigating factors.

The book also gives one a proper understanding of possible causes of ADHD and how should parents respond to it. We also appreciated the counsel Dr Belsham gives on medication and parenting a child with ADHD. He also gives very good general parenting skills. Every parent should read this book!
